I was born in Setagaya, Tokyo, the second of three brothers. In preschool, I was such a mischievous boy that they called me a “genius of pranks.”

It still feels almost miraculous that one book I published led me to meet my partner, and eventually connected me to Sara—an irreplaceable life.

Before marriage, even while sharing dreams and goals with my partner, I couldn’t picture us raising a family together. But when Sara was born and our family began to take shape, I discovered her strength and kindness, and something inside me began to change as well.

Thanks to this precious being, I—someone who had always lived with myself as the priority—found myself thinking more about others, gaining experiences that added depth to who I am as a person.

In her name, Sara (桜來), we placed the wish that “no matter how long the winter, spring will always come.” We hope she will grow into someone who blossoms with hope like a cherry tree.

From now on, as the three of us, I want to see the wonderful scenery that only we can share, and experience life’s joys and challenges together. Through tears and laughter, in every moment, my greatest happiness is to live as a family.

Did you enjoy the Oyako Day Online Talk Live with special guest Rica Matsumoto on Thursday, August 28?

It has been 30 years since Bruce and I first met Rica and her father, when we had the opportunity to photograph them together as parent and child. For a time, we lost touch, but about 10 years ago, we reached out again, hoping to feature their portrait on the cover of the photo book OYAKO.

Having Rica join us in today’s Talk Live truly feels like a “chain of miracles,” filling us with both gratitude and emotion.

If you haven’t seen the Talk Live yet, we warmly invite you to watch the archived stream.

To commemorate this occasion, Rica has kindly offered a signed copy of her essay collection Laugh & Peace, where she shares her thoughts and experiences, as a gift to one lucky viewer.

If you would like to apply, please send us an email with the subject line “Rough & Peace Application” and include your name and contact information to the following address:

We would also be delighted if you could include a message of support for Rica and the Oyako Day project. Your words will be a great encouragement to us. We look forward to receiving your applications!

In addition, Rica will be starring in and directing her special 40th anniversary stage performance Navigation, to be held at the Kanagawa Arts Theatre from September 12–14. Don’t miss it!

BOUSAI ACTION 2025 is a new-style disaster preparedness event planned and organized by students. It is hosted by Bousai me!—a student group from Fukushima—who wish to inspire their peers to engage seriously with disaster prevention. This marks the second edition of the event.

Bruce and Yoshiko will also take the stage to share about the Oyako Day project, as well as our experiences from I tie ☆ Aitai, a workshop-style initiative we carried out with students in the disaster-affected areas of the Great East Japan Earthquake. In this project, local junior and senior high school students and community members documented and shared their daily lives, creating a way to reconnect hearts and rebuild bonds.

We hope to reflect together with the younger generation on how the lessons we learned can be applied to future disaster preparedness and community building.

Event details:

The recipients of this year’s “Oyako Award” were featured in the July 26 evening edition of the Mainichi Shimbun newspaper.

This year’s “Oyako Day” falls on July 27.

For the 19th Oyako Award, we have selected the parent-child duo of Ittetsu Morishita—a photographer who has spent nearly half a century documenting atomic bomb survivors and advocating for nuclear abolition both in Japan and abroad, as well as the founder of the NPO World Hibakusha Exhibition—and his daughter Miho, who has inherited his mission.

“Oyako Day” is a day to reflect on the bonds of life and their importance through the close relationship of parent and child. Marking its 23rd year in 2025, we present this award with deep respect to these two, who continue to communicate their wish for peace as a parent and child.

Selection and announcement were made by the “Oyako Day Promotion Committee.”
